Initial Teacher Training
SCHOOL EXPERIENCE PROGRAMME & SCHOOL DIRECT WITH KTSA
INTERESTED IN BECOMING A TEACHER?
The School Experience Programme (SEP) is open to anyone who is thinking of training to become a teacher. It is a national programme, managed through the Department for Education’s website - http://www.education.gov.uk/get-into-teaching/school-experience/sep - and Coombe Girls’ School is pleased to offer placements and advice to any potential teacher training applicants.
School experience is vital to prospective new teachers, as many teacher training providers now ask for a minimum amount of experience of working with young people prior to application. Candidates are expected to show that they have a good understanding of the role of a teacher, give examples of creative and innovative teaching styles they have observed and discuss how they may tailor lessons to cater for students with different abilities and backgrounds. They are also often tested on their knowledge of the national curriculum for their subject, and general teaching pedagogy. A good quality school experience prior to application can help them evidence this.
As the lead school for the Kingston School Direct Alliance, we also find that the SEP visit is a fantastic opportunity for us to meet potential applicants, explain the applications process, outline the PGCE courses which we offer in Kingston schools (through the UCL Institute of Education and the University of Roehampton) and give any support we can.
Visitors on the SEP to Coombe Girls’ will usually have a talk from a member of staff involved in teacher training, followed by two or three lesson observations and chance to talk to subject department member.
- If you would like to visit, you can apply through the Department for Education’s website, or see our Train to Teach events listed on the flyer at the bottom of this page.
- For further enquiries, please contact Tracy Wellbelove (Teaching School Administrator) at firstname.lastname@example.org
School Direct is a route into teaching which enables graduates to choose the schools where training takes place with an exception of employment once the programme is successfully completed. School Direct offers you the opportunity to spend the majority of time in school, learning directly from experienced professionals whilst also having designated time to undertake additional development opportunities in preparation for becoming a highly qualified and skilled professional.
