Coombe Students bravely stride ahead in the face of change
Students at Coombe Girls’ School are yet again celebrating their achievements at GCSE.
Over one third of all GCSE entries have been graded 7-9 in the new government threshold (equivalent to A*-A grades). The new national numerical grading system allows for the highest achievers to be awarded a grade 9 which places them in the very top national attainment band.
Coombe Girls’ School has maintained its exceptionally high standards of achievement despite the ongoing changes to subject specifications from exam boards.
An impressive 56% of Coombe students achieved the English Baccalaureate (EBacc), a high threshold performance measurement set out by the government, which is double that of the national average.
Reflecting the trends of our results at A Level, Coombe Girls’ students have displayed resilience and commitment and have performed highly across all subject areas. The girls have excelled in not only the traditional subjects but also in the STEM areas, such as Maths and Science, in which women are usually under-represented.
Among a whole host of high achievers, notable commendation goes to Lucy Ferguson who has achieved a fantastic result of 10 grade 9s,1A*and 1 A; Anna Lappin gained an outstanding 9 grade 9s,1A*, 1A and1 grade 7. Other notable successes were from Annalise Spahr, Katherine Williamson and Adela Fernandez with each gaining 6 grade 9s, 3 grade 8s 2 A*s and 1 A.
Coombe’s upward success of its students is due to its balanced and academic curriculum, which has been firmly maintained, despite significant exam board changes.
Today’s GCSE results show evidence of our girls showing bravery in their choices, being bolder in their studies and resilient to whatever change is thrown at them. Each student continues to significantly achieve well above average progress from their secondary school starting points giving high levels of value added to every student.
Andrew Platt, Head teacher comments ‘We are so proud of our girls’ amazing achievements today and throughout their time at Coombe.
