Coombes Girls School

LRC Carnegie Club

It’s that time of year again when the LRC Book Chat Club morphs into the LRC Carnegie Club as they shadow the judging process for the CILIP Carnegie Book Awards.

The group, which consists of pupils from Years 8, 9 & 10, meet bi-weekly to read, discuss and review the shortlisted books. This year’s books are:

  1. Wed Wabbit by Lissa Evans (David Fickling Books)

  2. After the Fire by Will Hill (Usborne)

  3. Where the World Ends by Geraldine McCaughrean (Usborne)

  4. Rook by Anthony McGowan (Barrington Stoke)

  5. Release by Patrick Ness (Walker Books)

  6. Saint Death by Marcus Sedgwick (Orion)

  7. The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas (Walker Books)

  8. Beyond the Bright Sea by Lauren Wolk (Corgi)

Along with thousands of other schools in the UK, the Coombe Girls’ Shadowing Group have their own group page on the website to leave reviews and blog posts.

A recent poll of shadowers across the UK revealed:

  • 89% think Carnegie and Kate Greenaway shortlists introduce them to new books they otherwise might not have read

  • 70% talk to their librarian more when reading the shortlists

  • 79% say reading and discussing the books on the shortlists makes them think more about the books they read.

  • 88% tell us they read in their spare time and in the evenings.

The groups also vote for their own winners and can compare their choices with those of the judges who will announce the official winner on Monday 18th June 2018. We look forward to seeing the results!
