The Student Voice

The development of student voice initiatives in our school is important. It provides opportunities for students to become activelyinvolved in decision making and to take on leadership roles, working with others to have a say in how the school moves forward.

Application information

"We are currently looking for Class Representatives, to sit on Year Councils, and Student Councillors. Check out the job descriptions and write a letter to your Deputy Head of Year saying why you would want to do one of these roles. Alternatively, a friend can nominate you by downloading the form, completing it and passing it to your Deputy Head of Year. The deadline for applications is Friday 12th September."

The Jack Petchey Achievement Award Scheme

You do not need to be the cleverest, fastest, best behaved, best looking, neatest, most organised…

Coombe Girls’ has joined the Jack Petchey Award Scheme, which allows us to make one very special award each month to a student who has made an outstanding contribution in our community. Each month’s achiever will:

? Have worked hard or done something positive for others
? Be nominated by other students
? Be celebrated through an assembly and the school’s Jack Petchey notice board
? Attend a big award ceremony with other local schools
? Receive a letter of congratulations from Mrs Campbell
? Receive a Jack Petchey certificate and badge
? Receive a cheque for £200 to be spent on something for the school and its students
? Decide how the award money will be spent

School council are compiling a “Wish List” of ideas for spending the money and this could include using the money to subsidise an event like a year trip to the pantomime; paying for a visit from an expert actor or dancer; or contributing to improving the school environment. Class representatives gather ideas for this “Wish List” for discussion at Year Council meetings who then take this information to Student Council.

Look at the “Student Voice Meetings Cycle 2008-9” to see when you can make a nomination for someone in a particular year group. Nomination forms will be available in registers at the beginning of the relevant week and these should be posted in the Jack Petchey Achievement Award box in reception. Nominations are also invited from parents, using the form attached to the newsletter.

Each month, a particular Year Council will be considering the nominations in their meeting and they will then inform Student Council of their chosen winner. The winner will be announced and presented with her certificate in assembly.

For more information about the scheme, please contact Mrs Knight, Assistant Head, or Mrs Anderson, Pastoral Administration Assistant.
