What is the IB Diploma programme?
The IB Diploma Programme is available and recognised world wide. It is administered by the International Baccalaureate Organisation and is offered by over 2000 schools in 136 countries. Students study six subjects for the full two years of the programme as well as working on an extended essay, taking a ‘Theory of Knowledge’ course and completing a programme of Creativity, Action and Service. (CAS) Students choose their subjects from six groups. All students study literature in their own language, mathematics, a foreign language and a science subject.
How is the IB Diploma Programme different from BTEC vocational study or A Levels?
The IB Diploma Programme is a different Post-16 education experience to either vocational or A Level study. Initially, students will study more separate subjects for a longer period of time than with the other types of courses. They also spend slightly more time learning in the classroom than students on ‘A’ Level or vocational courses.
Unlike ‘A’ Level study, students do not ‘drop’ subjects half way through the course. Students study all components of the programme for the full two years. IB Diploma Programme students have no modular exams in January or the summer. All exams are taken at the end of the two year course.
Advantages of studying for the IB Diploma.
The IB Diploma Programme is recognised worldwide and has an excellent reputation. It is also highly regarded by UK universities. Students do not have to specialise in their studies too soon because they are able to continue more subjects than they can with A Level or vocational study. This can also be particularly beneficial for university applications where IB students will have a broader range of choice and flexibility because of their wider course base.
Students’ studies and thinking are linked through the Theory of Knowledge course. This course is unique to the Diploma Programme and encourages students to reflect on their learning in their different subject areas. The CAS programme encourages social enterprise and community action in a way that is that is integral to the course.
What sorts of students are suited to the IB Diploma Programme?
Students who would prefer to continue with a broader range of subjects after their GCSEs are ideally suited to the IB Diploma Programme. They should also enjoy doing a range of extra activities alongside their studies and be confident in examinations. Students who are well organised, independently minded and are likely to achieve good GCSE grades are well suited to the IB Diploma programme.
