ICT
What does studying ICT involve?
The Applied GCE in ICT is designed to be delivered in the work related context and to allow you to develop an understanding of the ICT sector. Pupils will learn to select and use appropriate ICT tools and techniques to help them carry out investigations, capture and handle data, solve problems, make decisions, and present and communicate information. Students will also be aware of the benefits and drawbacks of ICT.
Students will learn how to showcase their skills in e-portfolios. Students will produce electronic portfolios that could easily become part of the 'promotional toolkit' they will need when they apply for university courses or jobs. Students will use multimedia to make their e-portfolios interesting and attractive to others.
How will I know if I would be good at it?
Learners who would benefit most from a GCE in Applied ICT are likely to have one or more of the following Level 2 qualifications: GCSE in Applied ICT (Double Award) at grades A*A*–CC, Intermediate GNVQ in ICT, four GCSEs at grade A*–C or BTEC First for IT Practitioners.Students who have completed a NVQ at Level 2 may also consider the qualification if they have covered relevant areas of the subject.
Modules that you will cover and assessment.
Students will study the following units at AS: The Information Age, The Digital Economy and The Knowledge Worker. At A2 students will study: Using Database Software, Managing ICT Projects and Using Multimedia Software.
Two units are portfolio assessed. Unit one is completed in the first term and unit two in the second. The third unit is a practical examination taken in the summer term.
Exam Board: Edexcel
What skills will I develop and where could studying this subject lead?
In ICT students will develop a broad range of ICT skills and knowledge of the uses of ICT in vocational contexts, as a basis for progression into further learning in ICT-related fields, including progression from AS to A2. You will develop knowledge and understanding of the components, functions and applications of information systems within a range of organisations. Students apply their knowledge and understanding of ICT and use skills (eg planning, research, evaluation, problem solving). Students develop an understanding of the impact of information systems on organisations’ personnel, policies and practices. Develop project management skills and an understanding of the need to work with others.
The Edexcel GCE in Applied ICT has been developed to provide a broad educational basis for further training, further education or for moving into appropriate employment. Appropriate further education might be: BTEC Higher National in Computing, a BTEC Foundation Degree in Computing or a degree in computing, IT or related fields.
