What does studying Health & Social care involve?

The GCE in Health & Social Care allows you to build skills as well as technical knowledge. It gives you a broad band of understanding, whilst focusing  on 4 specialist areas:

Health

Early Years (Care and Education)

Care of older People

Individuals with Specific Needs.

The content of the qualification has been devised to be taken alongside other GCEs, particularly science based subjects, Psychology or Sociology. At AS level you will complete 2 interesting Work Experience blocks, to observe and interact with clients in a residential care home for the elderly, and a special school.

How will I know if I am good at it?

Health & Social Care is ideal for students who are interested in people from all life stages with diverse and complex needs. It allows you to develop an understanding of human development through work related contexts and the opportunity to study the health and social care sector. A sound ability in English is important, as is an understanding of human growth and development.

Modules and Assessment

For the single award you study units 1, 2 & 3 at AS and units 7, 8 & 9 at A2 level.

Unit 1:Human Growth and Development (externally assessed)

Unit 2:Communication and Values (coursework)

Unit 3:Positive Care Environments (coursework)       

Unit 7:Meeting Individual Needs (externally assessed)

Unit 8:Promoting Health and Well Being (coursework)

Unit 9:Investigating Disease (coursework)

Examination Board: Edexcel

What Skills will I develop, and where could studying for the subject lead?

This subject qualifies for UCAS points. It will give you a wide range of progression options into further study, training, or relevant employment. Successful completion can lead on to degrees, BTEC Higher National Diplomas or NVQs. You will develop valuable communication and people skills which are vital in all walks of life. You will also learn the skills required for independent research.
