History
Yr 12 AS:
Unit 1 = Civil Rights in the USA 1945-68 + Presidency and Society in the USA 1968-2001
Unit 2 = Mass Media, Popular Culture and Social Change in Britain since 1945
Yr 13 A2
Unit 3 = Cold War to Détente 1945-1990
Unit 4 = Germany 1890-1991 (Coursework)
This course is very modern not going back before 1890 for one course and indeed 1945 for the other three courses and finishing in the 1990s or indeed the present day. Therefore students need to be interested in modern British, German, American and World history.
Students need to have an interest and preferably passion for history (or why bother studying it) they need to be motivated and willing to read articles and books for themselves and not rely just on the information taught in class. Students MUST appreciate that history is not about having a good memory for dates and facts but indeed the appreciation that history is open for debate and all about differing interpretations. Students will be required to structure and write in-depth arguments looking at both sides of the case and using examples to back up these arguments reaching a balanced judgement in the conclusion.
Requirements for AS/A2 History
Students must have at least 5 A* - C grades at G.C.S.E, it is prefered that students have studied history at G.C.S.E and gained at the very minimum a C grade preferably a B grade or above. If students have not studied history at G.C.S.E then we would be looking for a C grade (preferably above) in another humanities subject (ie RE or geography).
History is a very literate subject, good written communication skills are ESSENTIAL, they will be required to write essays and to structure them putting forward 2 sides of an argument with supporting evidence and a balanced judgement in the conclusion. Therefore at the very minimum students must have a C grade and preferably higher in G.C.S.E English Language and Literature. If students have poor literacy skills then this is not the subject for them.
The Examination
History at Coombe follows the Edexcel examination board and will involve 2 examinations in Yr 12 (one for each unit) Each unit is 50% of the total AS grade or 25% of the overall A2 grade. Students will be required to show good knowledge and understanding of the topics they have studied and be able to put forward evidence to support two conflicting points of view and make a judgement based on the evidence. Students will also be marked on the quality of their written English.
In Yr 13 this is also true but students will be required to produce an in-depth piece of coursework on Germany. Part of this will require analysis of the whole period and a further piece will focus on a specific event or personality across the 100 years. This will represent 20% of the total marks across the two years.
History and the Future!
History is an academically rigorous subject which is highly respected by universities and employers alike. History teaches very valuable skills such as analysis, evaluation, interpretation, using evidence, making balanced judgements, managing information and most importantly history is about people and understanding human behaviour and actions. All of these skills are extremely useful which ever walk of life we embark upon and they are highly transferable.
Winston Churchill said “he who is ignorant of history is in danger of repeating it” How true, we can see so many cycles and patterns in history let is learn form the past to make a better future. Let us learn form the past to break down racism and prejudice, to fight poverty, disease and war. Let us learn from the past and other societies and cultures to realise how lucky we are to live in a progressive and democratic society. Let us learn to be proud of our country to take joy in the successes of this United Kingdom.
