Departmental Information

In English we aim to develop the pupils ability to:

• read and analyse a wide range of texts.
• effectively articulate their ideas in discussion
• write with increasing technical accuracy, structuring their ideas clearly and deploying their abilities to use language appropriately for a range of purposes and audiences.

Key stage 3:

Schemes of work are arranged according to topic and to provide coverage of the Key Stage 3 framework for teaching English. All years 7, 8 and 9 will work on the transition material, receive an introduction to the Learning Resources Centre, will be expected to maintain a personal reading log and will study generic forms of writing, being given opportunities to develop their own writing skills. Their individual reading will include both classical and more modern writers as well as modern texts. All classes will have opportunities to participate in public speaking.

BOOKED UP - Encouraging reading
A Government initiaitive to ensure every Year 7 Student has a free book. Coombe has signed up to this and all Year 7's were able to select their book from a selected 10 and these have now been distributed via their English teachers.

Key stage 4:

At GCSE we follow the AQA English and AQA English Literature course.

Course content:

Study of modern and classical literature, analysis of newspapers, advertisement and lively discussions.

You will have opportunities for personal writing. You will read a Shakespeare play, some modern drama, a range of prose, and study a very varied selection of poetry. Oral work is an important element of the course, and half of your English coursework mark is made up from oral assessment.

And you will gain two GCSE’s, helped by a very experienced department with considerable success in ensuring that students achieve their best.
