Coombe Girls’ School Saves the Rainforest
Pupils in Year 8 at Coombe Girls’ School have been working hard last month to save the rainforest. They managed to raise £100 and this brought them 4 acres of rainforest in Ecuador.
Pupils arranged a mini fete in order to raise money to save the rainforests that they had learnt about in geography lessons. Through the charity ‘World Land Trust’ every £25 they raised would buy them an acre of rainforest.
Their geography teacher Mr Steven Smith was over the moon with the pupils efforts ‘We are thrilled that our students put in so much effort to protect such a globally important ecosystem. Well done girls!’
Two Year 11 students also took part in a debate this week at Kingston University on the topic ‘Climate Change’. Chajitha Sothinathan and Layla Jaabaq were part of a large group discussing whether we are really at a defining moment in history regarding climate or are predictions of climate disaster scaremongering?
Leading the debate was Dr Mayer Hillman; author of ‘How to Save the Planet’ a radical green social scientist from the Policy Studies Institute. Chairing the debate was Dr Ros Taylor, Course Director of Environmental Science and Management at Kingston University. This was a great opportunity for pupils to question the experts and gain a greater insight into climate change. This event was organised as part of Kingston borough ‘Think in Kingston’ festival.
Both pupils found the event very informative, Layla stated ‘The debate was thoroughly enjoyable with many arguments flying around the room; we will definitely be keeping in touch with people that lead campaigns in and around Kingston’.
