As a department our ethos is creativity for all, we believe that all pupils should experience creativity and the benefits of creative thinking.

Art and Design allows students to develop their knowledge, understanding and skills of two and three dimensional materials through a wide range of creative, exciting and stimulating learning experiences. Students will also develop their knowledge of the world around them through personal investigations into a broad a range of both traditional and contemporary artists, designers, craftspeople and cultures. As the course progresses students will use this knowledge to inform the development of final realisations in response to various themes.

what to expect in year 7
 

Students will be introduced to creative practices in a range of two and three dimensional media exploring elements of drawing, paint and mixed media. Taught projects will instil a knowledge of core skills and will introduce students to the work of both traditional and contemporary artists to provide inspiration and a context for their own artwork. Students will work both independently and in groups and ideas will be recorded primarily in a sketchbook. Additional opportunities will be provided for students to develop their creativity in extracurricular clubs during lunchtime and after school.

YEAR 7 SKETCH BOOK

what to expect in year 8
 

Students will build upon the core skills taught in Year 7 and expand upon their knowledge through more challenging projects in drawing, printmaking and three dimensional artworks. Students will research the work of both traditional and contemporary artists to inform and inspire the development of their own work.  Students will work both independently and in groups and ideas will be recorded primarily in a sketchbook. As part of the curriculum, students also have the opportunity to participate in an Art day to produce artwork to be displayed within the school’s environment.  Additional opportunities will be provided for students to develop their creativity in extracurricular clubs during lunchtime and after school.

YEAR 8 SKETCH BOOK

what to expect in year 9
 

Students will develop more independent creative practices in a range of two and three dimensional media including drawing and painting and mixed media. Projects will allow students to develop more autonomy in their choices to provide students with the confidence and skills necessary to be successful on a GCSE course.  Taught projects will introduce students to the work of both traditional and contemporary artists to provide inspiration and a context for their own artwork. Students will work both independently and in groups and work primarily in a sketchbook to record their ideas. Additional opportunities will be provided for students to develop their creativity in extracurricular clubs during lunchtime and after school.

What does studying Art and Design involve?

The course consists of two coursework units; ‘Natural Forms’ and Portraiture/Identity’ and an externally set practical assignment completed at the end of Year 11.

How will I know if I am good at it?

In the first instance, students should speak to their teachers about their ability to successfully complete the course. They should also refer to the assessment grades and feedback provided to them throughout Key Stage 3.

Students should consider an art and design qualification if they have:

  • An enjoyment of the creative process.
  • A willingness to learn and an interest in learning through practical work, relating these skills to art, craft and design.
  • An interest in producing a range of work that develops an idea from an initial idea through to a final piece.
  • An interest in investigating art, craft and design from different cultures from the past and present to inspire and inform your own work.
  • A good ability to communicate your ideas visually and orally both individually and within a group and to work well with others.
  • Good organisation of time to meet set deadlines.

What skills will I develop?

Alongside developing creative skills in a range of two and three dimensional materials, techniques and processes, students also develop a range of additional skills which can be transferred to other subjects across the curriculum. These include:

  • Excellent discipline to self-manage the development of a project

Where could the subject lead?

This course is most suited to students who are intending to pursue a career in Art, Craft and/or Design. However, some students just enjoy the making, problem solving and creativity of art and complete their education of this subject in Year 11. However, the skills learnt and acquired during this time are very valuable and can help you gain a good qualification to progress into the sixth form, college and then university. An art and design background will also enable you to work in a huge variety of careers sectors from architecture, manufacturing, fashion, curation to designing vacuum cleaners!

what to expect in year 10 & 11
 

Students will complete two thematic units which run throughout Year 10 and Year 11; ‘Natural Forms’ and ‘Portrait/Identity’. As the course progresses, students will learn how to use their knowledge and experiences to select appropriate processes and resources to develop their own personal ideas in response to these themes. Alongside the practical work, students will also develop analytical skills as they develop their knowledge and understanding of art, craft and design from around the world. In each year students will have the opportunity to visit a gallery or museum to view art work first hand.

In the final year, students will complete their final examination. Students will develop an ideas during an 8-week preparation period, that culminates in a 10-hour practical examination.

The final grade for the course is made up of both the coursework units and the examination unit.
