Gym and Dance Extravaganza
Over a hundred pupils took part in an amazing Gym and Dance Display at Coombe Girls’ School on Wednesday 1st February and Thursday 2nd February. They performed to packed out audiences on both nights and at Thursday nights performance people had to be turned away from the door as it was sold out. The performance consisted of 24 different gym and dance routines performed from pupils in Year 7 up to Year 13 and all of the highest quality. Many of the routines were choreographed by the pupils themselves and in their own spare time. The theme of the show was ’Faster, Higher, Stronger’ taken from the Olympic motto. This Olympic theme was shown in the opening ceremony which involved everyone that took part in the performance.
Taking part in the event where Johanna Chappell and Tamsin Lawrence who are both National Gymnastics Tumbling finalists and many of the audience where taken aback at the high quality of the gymnastic and dance at Coombe. One of the audience stated ‘The pupils have really put on a great show tonight and the standard of PE at Coombe is superb’. This is the first time that a show has been put on in the new Sports hall and Performing Arts Centre at Coombe, which was opened in September by HRH Princess Alexandra.
The Coombe PE staff stated ‘The revival of the Gym and Dance display was extremely successful mainly due to the dedication and talent of the students involved. We are very proud of all that took part.’ Many of the dance routines from this show including the routine choreographed by Coombe’s GCSE PE student Jessica Ferman, will also be shown in the ‘Kingston Secondary Schools’ Dance Festival 2006’. This year the festival will be held at the Surbiton Assembly Halls, Maple Road on Saturday 13th May. The festival is designed as an opportunity for Kingston secondary schools to present some of the dance work that takes place in schools as well as other organisations in the Kingston Borough. Tickets for this event can be purchased on the door and will include performance by Coombe Girls’ School, Tolworth Girls’ School, Holycross, Tiffin Boys and many others.
