Teaching Aims
• To build specialist Modern Language teaching capacity within RBK primaries
• To share good teaching practice across schools
• To continue the cross-phase link in RBK
Learning Aims
• To introduce and reinforce basic vocabulary and structures
• To promote an enthusiasm for learning Modern Languages in our pupils
• To reinforce skills in literacy (listening skills, understanding grammatical patterns, oral confidence)
• To reinforce skills in numeracy (counting, calculation, money, time, dates)
• To support an understanding of geographical and historical work relating to other countries
• To support the understanding of other cultures which underpins Citizenship Studies
Course Structure
• The course will follow the QCA schemes for KS2 in French, German and Spanish
• Year 4 will be targeted in the initial year, Year 4 and 5 in the second, Year 4, 5 and 6 in the third
• Each class will study their MFL for 16 weeks, taught alternately by the outside specialist and the in-house teacher
• Schools will nominate a Coordinator for MFL (and an in-house MFL teacher, if not the same)
• Each MFL specialist’s lesson lasts 30 minutes (should be observed by the in-house teacher)
• During the alternating week, the lesson will be taken by the in-house teacher alone (unobserved)
• After the lesson, the MFL specialist stays 30 mins to help the in-house teacher with planning
• Classes in a school may be taught by different outside specialists at different times in the week
Therefore, a 2 form entry school will need to release their in-house teacher for 2 hours a week.
• By the end of the 16 week course, pupils should be working between Levels 1 and 3. An
assessment could be made and levels awarded if required.
Course Support
• One meeting per term will be held at Coombe Girls’ School for the Coordinators and/or in-house teachers in order to share practice and receive further training
• Resources will be posted on an open access website
• Other resources will be available from Coombe Girls’ School
• A small amount of funding will be attached to this project per school for release of teachers and purchase of resources.
