GUJARATI
AS/A2 LEVEL
OCR. 3866
Studying AS/Advanced GCE Gujarati helps candidates further develop the skills of reading and writing at a level beyond GCSE. They learn about the culture of countries where Gujarati is spoken and become able to communicate with people in these countries. At A2, candidates learn in depth about the literature of these countries and their culture.
The Advanced Subsidiary GCE qualification has one unit and is assessed through a single three-hour examination which tests reading and writing.
Questions for the AS examination require:
• non-productive and productive responses in Gujarati;
• the transfer into English of a passage of Gujarati;
• a response in Gujarati (report or letter) to a stimulus text in Gujarati.
For candidates wishing to further develop their skills beyond AS level, a further unit can be taken to complete the full Advanced GCE qualification. This unit is assessed through a single three-hour paper testing reading, writing and knowledge of Gujarati culture or literature.
Candidates taking this A2 examination:
• respond to questions in Gujarati;
• transfer into Gujarati of a passage of English;
• Write two short essays on set topics or literary texts.
No dictionaries are allowed in either of the two examinations.
These AS/Advanced GCE qualifications are aimed at 17-18 year olds who have already taken GCSE Gujarati, but they are open to students of all ages.
Both the AS and A2 unit examinationsare available in the summer session each year.
