Outstanding success for an outstanding Sixth Form!
Records were broken today at Coombe Sixth Form, with the best ever A level results the school has achieved.
A quarter of Coombe students achieved A grades in this years remarkable set of A Level examination results.
Half of Coombe Students achieved A or B grades.
Carol Campbell, Head teacher said:
”We are thrilled with these results. They are unprecedented, and a testament to the hard work and commitment of our
students, their parents and our staff.” As the largest sixth form in the borough, Coombe lived up to its exceptional
reputation again.

In 2008 Coombe achieved 95.5% A – E grades but this year the school reached a new level of excellence with 97.6% A – E grades.
The number of A grades rose from 17.2% last year to 23.5% with an unusually high number of students achieving 3 or 4
straight A grades. The number of B grades also rose from 38.4% in 2008 to 50% this year.
Excited students receiving their results
Dave Peters, Director of Sixth Form, says:
“the spectacular number of A grades is particularly important because this is the first year of the new UCAS ‘Adjust System’.” It means
that candidates can now opt for better universities in August on the strength of their results if they are better than expected. This gives
students an opportunity to make the most of good results. We will be working with our students to see they take advantage of the
new system.”
Charlene Edwards was surprised by her achievement of 4 A grades at A2 level and is now able to be one of the first
to use this system to opt for a better university. One candidate who does not need help is Alex Duffy. She achieved
4 straight A grades and can now take up her place at Oxford to read English Literature in October.

The schools top performer is Charlotte Rowe, who achieved 4 straight A grades at A2 and will be applying to
Cambridge University next year.
Other exceptional students who achieved straight A grades and will be going to their chosen University places are
Emily Dock [to Durham University to read English], Emily Wheeler [to Exeter to read Politics].
Coombe is one of a select group of high-performing specialist schools in the country. Its results have been consistently
good over the years and this has earned it extra funding from the government for its three specialisms: Modern Foreign
Languages, Leading Edge and Training School. Coombe Sixth Form is one of the largest school sixth forms in the country.
Recruitment for September 2010 is already underway.
