Coombe Enjoys the Korean New Year
Coombe Girls’ School enjoyed an afternoon of music and dance on Friday 16th February, performed by the South Korean troupe ‘Dulsori’ using synchronised drumming, in a full stage show interspersed with singing and dancing.
The Mayor Mary Reid and 40 guests from the local community of New Malden joined over 250 pupils from Coombe Girls’ School for this fabulous event. The performance was to celebrate Korean New Year Seol-nal which is on the 18th February.
Dulsori is the first Korean Arts company in the UK; its vision is, ‘to introduce high quality Korean arts and culture to the UK whilst facilitating a clearer understanding of each other’s culture. This can be achieved by presenting Korean performances which are creative, highly skilled and passionate’.
Dulsori performed ‘Binari’ which literally means ‘appealing the anxious heart to a supernatural being’; this is a vigorously pulsating production which is colourful and traditional. They use rhythms to create the sounds of the natural world – thunder, lightning, rain and wind.
Claire Urmston, a teacher of music at Coombe, remarked on the amazing performance, ‘The pupils really enjoyed it and got involved. It is great for them to experience music from different cultures, especially one so involved in our local community’
