Coombe Girls’ School Turns Political!
On Tuesday, 28th March, the whole of Year 7 at Coombe Girls’ School took part in the first Citizenship Day focusing on ‘Politics and Participation’. With the alarming statistic of 54% of young people stating that they would not be voting when they turned 18, it has now become vital to show pupils the importance of voting and that each vote matters.
Susan Kramer the local MP for Richmond and North Kingston was present for a great question and answer session with the Year 7’s and was challenged with some very thought provoking questions like ‘How does it feel being a women in a mans world?’. She stated that, ‘The Year 7’s really seem to enjoy politics and taking part’, but she hopes that the success can continue for years to come.
The pupils then had the opportunity to create their own political party and present them to their peers. Mr Ali, Head of Citizenship, stated ‘There were some superb presentation from the pupils and they showed some great understanding of politics and the issues involved. Maybe we have some budding female politicians of the future in our mists.’
